What I'm Reading...a Review for you!

Outside of my normal Curly Girl life I also do reviews for a couple places on the net. In the course of this I come across books I'd like to recommend and share so thought my blog would be a great place to do so. WARNING: This is not about hair!

Yesterday I finished one of the best books I've read in quite a while: Girl In Translation by Jean Kwok. It's not the sort of story I usually pick up but I've decided to branch out. I don't know how to describe it but this book called to me. I felt connected to it. I've posted a review on amazon (so you can read it there--my reviewer name is AlexJouJou) but if you are at all interested in great books with wonderful characters and a story of love, perseverance, and hope you MUST pre order this or pick it up. It is worth every penny. The writing is top notch and you will grow to love the characters and cheer them on.

If you're read it please post a comment below. I think it comes out on April 29th. ENJOY!

  1. I'd like to first say how weird it is that I have been searching for good haircare products and keep stumbling across your comments and now your blog.
I came across your name "Alexjoujou" about 4 different ways..it was bananas.
First time was on naturallycurly, then on curlmart, amazon and now here... it didn't hit me you were the same on this as well after I began avidly reading all of your blogs on products I have been eager/interested in buying..
first off..thank you for the amazing descriptions!
secondly, my hair type is almost the same as your daughter's...3b, shoulder length hair, low porosity..i have only gone CG for about a month...i've been using pureology hydrate shampoo and conditioner with one of their protein shampoos when my hair is damaged (my hair doesn't require much protein)...
i style with CJ curl assurance leave-in although sometimes i wonder if it is causing me frizz? and Jessicurl RR and CC... the magnesium sulfate is taking a toll on my hair..the first week i used it i had perfect, shiny and vibrant hair..n ow my hair feels like straw, is slightly shiny and frizzy...back to square one before i went CG...i'm also realizing pureology isn't as vegan as they appear, noticing the silicones and parabens they are using in their products :/
i was hoping you could give me tips that have worked well for your daughter (cleansing, conditioning, leave-ins, DT, gel/gellies, etc.)

i'm desperate to make my hair work but i do not have the money to expirement as much as i would like to (i love how curious you are about products!)

also, have you ever tried anything from the mozeke hairline?
    thank you so much!

  2. HI!
I haven't tried Mozeke (but have seen it mentioned)..it'll have to go on my list!

For my daughter actually some of the cheapest stuff works great. They definitely aren't natural but we use a lot of the Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition and the Giovanni 50/50 as well as the Yes To products.

We use the Curl Junkie as well for her--but mostly the Hibiscus and Banana. I try to find stuff for her that will actually sink into her hair.

Depending on whether or not your hair likes protein some good options to try are the Giovanni 50/50 (works great as cowash and condish in a pinch), the Yes To Tomatoes and Yes To Cucumbers conditioners (I haven't tried the shampoo's). These should be pretty easy to find and relatively inexpensive comparitively (vs. ordering online!)

We love the BellaCurl Leave in Elixir for her as well..and find it is more moisturizing than the Curl Junkie Curl Assurance for my daughter.

I use the Beauty Without Cruelty Leave In frequently (it has protein so we don't use it too much for my daughter)

Another option if you can handle protein is the EO conditioners you might be able to use that you can get from Marshall's for a pretty good price. They are some of our favorites.

I hope this helps!! Cool that you keep running into me :)

  3. thank you for your reply!
i must say, i tried GF TN and am in love :~)
i was suprised to find it was more "vegan" than the pureology conditioner i was using.

i hope to buy CJ HBDF before I head overseas this summer (2 1/2 months is a long time without great haircare products!--that's how long i will be gone)... i saw from the ingredients it does have a bit of protein, so i will find out from using the product as a DT and LI if i am protein sensitive..i use an occasional protein shampoo whenever i have recently dyed my hair, so i can't justify if my hair TRULY likes it or not...

the bella curl lines looks amazing, as does the spiral solutions deep treatment( i know you didn't recommend it but from the ingredients it looks divinee! i can't believe it has a latte fragrance).

and now i am babbling :)
thank you ever so much for your quick response and amazing blog!

one last question...which do you think is better, curl junkie conditioners/deep treatments or jessicurl?

  4. I think either CJ or Jessicurl are great. I would lean more towards CJ because we use that more.

    Good luck!
